Y!kes - Uncanny Valley

Y!KES are an alt-rock four piece based in Birmingham and have recently released their debut single Uncanny Valley. The title comes from a phenomenon in which artificial intelligence/robots bear identical resemblance to humans which arouses a sense of unease or revulsion which is a cool concept and context for this track. As you can imagine, the lyrics explore disguise, falseness and trickery as well as a feeling of betrayal from someone you once loved but have grown to hate. The energy of Uncanny Valley would make for the ultimate adrenaline fuelled live performance. We see this also in the music video that accompanies this track as we see the band rocking out, delivering an untameable and wild performance. In the video, we also follow a giant cuddly teddy bear with a sinister smile as he feeds ducks in the park, makes a cuppa and gets into a scrap over a game of pool in the pub. Teddy eventually joins Y!KES to have his moment of rocking out with them and who can blame him? It must be pretty cathartic to let go and release all of your anger through music like that whilst also having a ton of fun and just being a bit silly with a 10ft teddy bear. Clearly, Y!KES are a band who don’t take themselves too seriously but do like to incorporate a deeper meaning into their music with the concept of the uncanny valley. Give the single a listen and look out for any live performances from Y!KES as I reckon they’re ones to watch live for sure.
